Meknes is one of Morocco's four imperial cities and is often the most peaceful and uncrowded. Built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, it features some of the most impressive monumental architecture in North Africa — particularly the enormous Bab Mansour gate, one of the most beautiful in the Islamic world.
